These people ventured to Canada for various reasons including work, escaping war and poverty in their homeland and the lure of a young growing nation. Canada held hope with work on the railway, a gold rush and free land. Distributor: McIntyre Media. A tribute for Remembrance Day that focuses on a harrowing escape to safety during WWII. Amongst the violence and terror, two countries an ocean apart became forever bonded by blood in more ways than one. Princess Margriet Francisca was famously born in Ottawa in 1943, while the Dutch royal family lived in Canadian exile during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. As way of thanks for the family’s treatment in Canada, the Dutch royal family sent 100,000 tulips to Ottawa in the fall of 1945. It was the start of a beautiful friendship that has lasted to the present day.

The story begins with Yaffa Eliach, a spirited young girl who grows up in a vibrant, happy 800-year-old town in Poland, filled with family life and rich traditions. Yaffa's grandmother, who receives a gift of a camera from America, becomes the village photographer, and takes photos of all the family events: weddings, bar mitzvahs, and family gatherings. And on the Jewish New Year, the villagers send photos to their relatives overseas to wish them a 'Gut Yontif'! But one dark day, the town is invaded. And quickly the once happy home to 5,000 Jewish people is uprooted. Yaffa survives the war and becomes a Professor of History and America's foremost Holocaust expert. And when President Jimmy Carter invites her to create an exhibit for the new National Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, she travels around the world hunting down her grandmother's photos taken of people who fled from her beloved town, Eishyshok, along with their stories and memories. This breathtaking revival of the town's collective spirit, which is a permanent exhibit at The National Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, will inspire all who read it.

Ursula Franklin was a brave and brilliant woman. Born in Germany with Jewish ancestry, she survived the Holocaust while many in her family were killed in the Nazi's concentration camps. She became a physicist and an engineer at a time when women were not welcome in academics. These experiences shaped Ursula, and she went on to stand up for equality, for peace, and for the protection of the environment and the vulnerable throughout her life. Ursula Franklin was also a caring mother, as her daughter Monica Franklin shows in the stories here. Ursula was celebrated in her lifetime, receiving both the Governor General's Award and the Pearson Medal of Peace. Today she has not only a street but a school named after her in Toronto, where children can learn to remain undaunted despite what hardships we face -- to pursue our dreams while standing up for what is right -- under the shelter of her name.

Compiled by educator and author Liz Kleinrock and author Caroline Kusin Pritchard, this powerful intersectional anthology celebrates thirty-six Jewish heroes from Tracee Ellis Ross, to Ezra Frech, to Dona Gracia Nasi. A first-ever collection that disrupts the narrative of how a Jewish person is perceived, What Jewish Looks Like includes accessible primers on important Jewish history, a map, quotes, and much more!
